MOVIE REVIEW THREESOME: American Hustle, The Book Thief, 12 Years A Slave

Hi everyone! I'm here with some more short movie reviews since I can't seem to make any progress on my novel in this shitty 44 degree (111 Fahrenheit) weather here in Australia. Also, 12 Years A Slave is simply a masterpiece.
AMERICAN HUSTLE
The best thing about this movie is the acting. Christian Bale has this hilarious comb over and pot belly that makes him likeable even though he's a criminal. It's his performance along with Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, and Bradley Cooper that makes the movie fun to watch. The movie's won quite a few "Best Film of 2013" awards, but I don't think it deserves it. It's entertaining, but ultimately, very very forgettable.
MY RATING OF AMERICAN HUSTLE: 8/10
THE BOOK THIEF
This is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Markus Zusak and I bought the book as soon as I watched the movie trailer. I haven't gotten around to reading the book and probably won't now because the movie is just so . . . fucking ordinary. It's not a bad movie, but it's not great either—it sits in that frustrating realm of mediocrity—and that's a shame because from what I've read about the book, it had the potential to be a classic movie.
MY RATING OF THE BOOK THIEF: 7/10
12 YEARS A SLAVE
Gravity is hands down my favorite movie of 2013, but if there's any other movie from 2013 that could be deemed a "masterpiece", it would be 12 Years A Slave.
You know how in school, teachers sometimes just pop in a video or DVD about a particular subject for students to learn instead of opening up a textbook and reading? Well, 12 Years A Slave + Steven Spielberg's Lincoln should be watched by all students if they want a graphic and powerful understanding of slavery in the US back in the 1800s.
It isn't just the subject matter that makes this a must-see movie, it's also everything else.
Firstly, the masterful directing by Steve McQueen (not the actor). There's a 5-10 minute sequence midway through the film where Chiwetel Ejiofor is hanging like a strange fruit that is without a doubt one of the most incredible things I've seen in any film in recent years. I won't describe the scene any further because it has to be experienced. It's an incredible scene that even the best adjectives won't do it any justice.
The rest of the film is also A-grade, top-notch stuff. The acting by everyone, and I mean everyone is superb—even Smaug, but the standouts are Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong'o.
The score by Hans Zimmer is surprisingly effective (especially during the hanging sequence I discussed). The cinematography and the—yes, blah blah blah, all of it is Oscar-worthy.
But movies ain't just a bunch of sounds and images that all combine to create something for you to rest your eyes upon—no—a truly great movie should pierce your soul and stir it. It should touch that inner core that makes us what we are: human beings.
You know how they say a movie can be life-changing? Well, this is one of those movies. For many, it will be an eye-opening look at slavery and one shit period in human history.
But for others, like myself, it's a simple reminder to be a good and decent person—even if it's just for a day, an hour, or a second—it all counts.
MY RATING OF 12 YEARS A SLAVE: 10/10
